Events - EIC ePitching with Investors on Manufacturing: endless potential
The EIC kicked of 2021 with a new EIC ePitching with Investors, this time on the topic of manufacturing, together with EuroQuity-Bpifrance. Seven EIC-funded SMES, all working on innovations related to manufacturing, got the chance to go head-to-head and impress the investor jury, consisting out of representatives from Iris Capital, 360 Capital Partners, Basinghall Partners, Caixa Capital Risc, BTOV and Presto Venture.
Manufacturing accounts for more than 16% of Europe’s GDD and more than 28 million jobs across the continent. This sector alone is responsible for close to 50% of Europe’s innovation expenditure, making it a driving force of innovation. Genes'Ink, Infinite Foundry, Lda Phononic Vibes, Streem.ai GmbH, Makersite GmbH, MOTEG GmbH and TWEVO Lda are seven EIC-beneficiaries working on innovations in this sector. They were selected to pitch and meet with the investor jury to find new investments, but also to see who would win ‘Best Pitch’. In the end MOTEG GmbH, represented by its CEO, Siegfried Gotz, convinced the judges the most and took home the prize.
Thorben Rothe, part of Iris Capital's team in Berlin, was one of the investors who joined the event. Thorben, and Iris Capital are quite familiar with the manufacturing sector, dubbing it “a sector where a plethora of new applications are being facilitated by the latest advancements in technology”. This helps manufacturing companies to become not only more efficient but also more secure, reliable and sustainable: “the increasing availability of data, computation power and smart algorithms enable companies to gain more transparency on manufacturing processes and to make better-informed decisions when it comes to production planning and execution”, as noted by Thorben. With this in mind, Thorben joined the ePitching with Investors to find out more about new start-ups in the manufacturing sector: “We see a lot of potential for European start-ups given the high density of small, medium, and large manufacturing companies in Europe. The EIC did a great job in picking a diverse set of quality companies from all over Europe. We have not yet invested in a company that has been backed by EIC. However, the event today was a strong promotion for the EIC portfolio and we have already identified start-ups with whom we will follow-up” Thorben concluded.
Winner of this month’s edition was Moteg Gmbh, represented by CEO Siegfried Götz. MOTEG has introduced an optimized set of innovative and unique auxiliary aggregates for electric buses and commercial vehicles. The development path for the aviation industry has enabled them to identify market opportunities in the automotive sector and to find synergies in an application-oriented product series development of electrical auxiliary units for commercial vehicles, the compAux series. This approach has then enabled them to set new standards in technology and efficiency.
Siegfried is a relative newcomer to the EIC BAS-events, although he stated that it already proved to be beneficial for him and his business “I’ve only attended two BAS-events before, but I can say it was a great learning curve to get in touch with investors”. According to Siegfried it’s important to “receive insights on how investors think and what they deem important”. In addition to the learning-aspect the EIC-events offer Siegfried the opportunity to tap into a European-wide network of investors,: “Before the EIC I didn’t have the chance to sell my company across the continent, I was mainly connecting with local governmental institutions and banks. With the support of the EIC it’s easier to get in touch with investors Europe-wide”. After having pitched, Siegfried is hoping that today’s session will pays its dividends: “I have several one-to-one’s planned this week, the investors were curious to know more about MOTEG. I’m hoping it will lead to something concrete at one point in the near future.”
