The EIC created a new Story 30 September 2020
Every month, during a Coffee Break, we will dive into the stories of EIC innovators and get a glimpse of the persons behind the start-ups. In today's episode, we get together with Richard Hardimann, co-founder and CEO of Ranmarine, a Rotterdam-based start-up.
On 3 and 4 June 2020 the European Innovation Council celebrated the launch of a brand-new initiative specifically focused on the EU Green Deal. The EIC Planet.tech brought together EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates with the objective to develop a number of impactful Proof of Concepts (PoC). During the past three months, the start-ups and corporates have been working hard, with several very promising results. During the R&I Days 2020, Planet.tech projects will be showcased and presented to the audience. This upcoming week we will highlight several of these projects in the EIC Community, starting with P&G and 4FOLD foldable Containers (from Holland Container Innovations).
From longer droughts to increased flooding and more robust crop diseases, climate change is creating new challenges for the European agriculture sector. With more accurate and reliable water data, crop yields on agricultural land can be improved and this information can help to fight the global food and water crisis. Through the support of the EIC-funded WATER4AGRI project, the Dutch company VanderSat developed a technology that can accurately measure the location and amount of water in the soil, anywhere in the world.
The newly signed Pathfinder project called BRAINIAQS promises huge breakthrough for biological imaging experiments. It will develop state-of-the-art technology using quantum sensing.

On 29 and 30 June 33 EIC-beneficiaries went on a digital tour of the Netherlands during the EIC Corporate Day with Dutch giants. During the event, the SMEs matched up and explored business opportunities and collaborations with four of the Netherlands’ largest corporates: Eneco, KPN, Rabobank and Unilever.
Dr. Regina Luttge is an expert in medical and biological microsystems having bio-inspired functionalities. She coordinates CONNECT, a Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project, which aims at providing better treatment for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.

Scaling a company further is unforeseen on solving a number of challenges – most of those being common across all organisations out there. 96 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 20 countries gathered to share their experiences during the EIC Accelerator Welcome Day. Some of them lost the fear of the camera and, during a small interview, shared with us their innovative approach, as well as current challenges they are facing in the industry. European Innovation Council pilot's funded company CEAD was the winner in the area of Innovative Processes with its development of an additive manufacturing process, which permits the use of continuous fibres in large components required for industrial applications.

Withlocals continues to attract investors after securing a €2.5m grant from the European Innovation Council's pilot SME Instrument back in 2015. This time the company raised €8m on a Series B round led by London-based Keen Venture Partners with participation from existing investor Inkef Capital.

European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot’s funded company Kitepower, whose focus is to develop the future generation of wind energy systems, welcomed Hendrik Hutting, widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of the modern wind energy industry, as part of their advisory board last month as enthusiastic investor and pioneering wind energy entrepreneur.

In May 2018, the EIC pilot’s funded company Sensius won the first EBAN-EASME Scaleup of the Month. As winner of the ePitch, Sensius was invited to pitch at the EBAN Winter Summit. Two weeks ago in Luxembourg at EBAN’s Winter Summit, Sensius stole the show by winning the Pitching Contest.
