The European Innovation Council is organising an ePitching with Procurers-session together with bpost, Belgium’s national post-provider. This session, taking place on 14 September 2020 at 1 pm CET, will be dedicated to matching EIC-beneficiaries with bpost’s procurement needs in the fields of eMobility and charging infrastructure.
Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up on our streets, in our rivers and covering our forests. A large part of this waste comes from packaging. The plastic bags we use, for only a few minutes, can last as long as 15 to 1,000 years in the environment and, according to a recent study, people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. The Finnish start-up Paptic Ltd, founded in 2015, addresses this environmental challenge with a sustainable alternative to plastic films. Paptic material has all the advantages of plastic - it's versatile, reusable, light-weight, soft, but it's made of renewable raw materials and it’s recyclable.

On 3 and 4 June 2020 the European Innovation Council celebrated the launched of a brand-new initiative specifically focused on the EU Green Deal. The EIC Planet.tech brings together EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates, namely AB inBev, DEME, Nestle and P&G, with the objective to develop a number of impactful Proof of Concepts (PoC). Nicolas Verschelden, Head of Digital Innovation ABI Europe and Managing Partner Dream Tech alliance, a joint consortium of different tech-partners that co-innovate and co-invest together, goes deeper into AB InBev’s motivations for joining Planet.tech and what they are hoping to get out of it.

On 29 and 30 June 33 EIC-beneficiaries went on a digital tour of the Netherlands during the EIC Corporate Day with Dutch giants. During the event, the SMEs matched up and explored business opportunities and collaborations with four of the Netherlands’ largest corporates: Eneco, KPN, Rabobank and Unilever.
The last few months have rapidly increased the digitalization of the economy. The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the sectors directly affected by the recent developments. There is a clear case for investment in deep-tech start-ups involved in IoT and July’s EIC ePitching with Investors subsequently delivered a session on IoT and Smart Cities. Bringing together seven highly innovative EIC-backed SMEs with seven investor firms, Crypto Quantique, a British deep-tech company working on innovative cybersecurity solutions, was this month’s EIC ePitching with Investors session.

The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with F. Hoffmann-La Roche, organised a four-day long EIC Corporate Day, as part of a virtual Roche Innovation Summit, from 22 to 25 June 2020. The EIC Corporate Day, one of the flag-ship Business Acceleration Services provided by the EIC, gives the EIC-backed startups the opportunity to opportunity to bridge the gap with corporate representatives and explore new synergies, business opportunities and further collaborations with them.

The idea behind the SMILE project follows the outcomes of an ongoing FET-Open (EIC Pathfinder) project called ChipScope, which focuses on developing the first chip-sized optical microscope with super-resolution capabilities, and semiconductor nanoLED arrays with individual pixel operation. Such highly integrated nanoLED arrays from ChipScope will lead to extreme miniaturization and simplicity for super-resolution microscopy.
In addition to facilitating Series A funding for selected companies through accelerator events, InvestHorizon offers an individual programme customised to the investment-readiness needs and challenges of each company. The programme aims to support 500 European Deeptech entrepreneurs in raising EUR 500 million over two and a half years. The EIC Community Training of June focused on this challenge and provided key recruitment tips, ranging from leadership strategies to the best ways for retaining top employees.
The EIC Fund, which will provide equity from €0.5m to €15m to breakthrough innovation companies selected for EIC Accelerator blended finance support (grant and equity), has become an official entity. This is the first time the European Commission will make such direct equity investments in companies, with ownership stakes expected to be in general from 10% to 25% in start-up companies. The European Investment Bank, as advisors of the EIC Fund on behalf of the European Commission, will manage the ownership stakes of the European Commission.
On 16 June 2020, the European Innovation Council organised an ePitching session with Investors on SaaS and ICT. After the event, Kinga Stanislawska, member of the EIC Advisory Board and herself a venture capital investor, talked more about the future of SaaS and ICT sector, commented the novelties introduced in the EIC programme and shared her views on the existing gender investment gap in Europe. Kinga is active in supporting women-led companies. The VC investor is a mentor in Vital Voices and Foundation for Women Entrepreneurship and also co-founded the ‘European Women in VC’ community of over 400 women in the European and Israeli VC space.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often praised for its ability to make objective and rational decisions, unlike humans, who deal with reality in a subjective manner. The researchers from the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project TIMESTORM trained robots to learn some of these subjective abilities of humans, focusing on time-perception.

The EIC started this summer by diving into the hot Software-as-a-Service topic. The ePitching on SaaS and ICT began with the speech of Kinga Stanislawska, member of the EIC advisory board, who mentioned the importance of this sector to the growth of Europe and finished with DeepCode winning the best pitch award. The online event brought together six high-class EIC-backed SMEs with nine investors firms.

On 23 June 2020, the Swiss multinational healthcare company will hold its 5th Partnering for Innovation Summit in a virtual format with the special collaboration of the European Innovation Council (EIC). In this online event, Roche will continue the conversation around transforming healthcare and take a different angle to focus on “how to build a sustainable ecosystem to drive innovation”.
The Irish company, developing cutting-edge technology to help cure cancers, has secured a significant new Series C round of approximately €18 million, bringing the total equity funding to around €37 million. The capital was led by existing shareholders, including Seamus Mulligan, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive.
Imagine travelling from Paris to Berlin (878km) in less than an hour. Cheaper, faster and greener travel, this is what Spanish start-up Zeleros is offering with their hyperloop. This new form of ground transport promises speeding up to 1,000km/h through a network of low-pressure tubes. It can make hundred-mile journeys more sustainable with 0 direct emissions, thanks to its fully electric powertrain. This month, the startup received €7m in funding to lead the development of its unique version of the “fifth mode of transport”.
On 9 June 2020 the European Innovation Council hosted an EIC Community Training on HR for start-ups in the process of scaling. In this session 21 EIC-funded SMEs had to chance to learn and interact with Jose Martinez, EIC business coach specialised in leadership and HR, and EIC community member Diana Špakauskaitė, HR-manager at Ruptela.

Since 4 June 2020, the Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is traded on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with BBVA and Ferrovial, organised an online Corporate Day on 26 and 27 May 2020, bringing together 19 EIC-backed SMEs with over 50 corporates representatives. The online Corporate Day was the second event of its kind to be organised this month and gave SMEs and corporate representatives the opportunity to find synergies and explore business opportunities and further collaborations.
In 2018, thanks to EnduroSat, the Bulgarian Space Industry celebrated a historical moment: the first country’s CubeSat was activated in space and connected to two ground stations. This was the first space mission for EnduroSat, involving schools and universities to ensure a long-lasting educational outreach program in addition to the technical verification of all the components. This year, a new satellite from EnduroSat will lift off, and the Bulgarian startup will make history again.

Time is an illusion, breakfast time doubly so. In future, human workers might not be alone in experiencing frenetic mornings thanks to EU-funded researchers who have equipped robots with human-like time perception capabilities – and tested them in the kitchen.
Greening agriculture is one of the main challenges in the fight against climate change. In line with the European Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Farm to Fork Strategy for a healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Many pesticides and antibiotics are being banned to ensure healthier food, boost organic farming and privilege the use of eco-friendly solutions. Founded in 2018, the EIC-funded innovation developed by Agrosustain is a good example working on this domain. The Swiss start-up is trying to reduce food waste and promote sustainable agriculture with natural solutions for pest management.
On 13 and 14 May the European Innovation Council hosted an Innovation Training Workshop for projects from the EIC Pathfinder programme, previously known as Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme. The European Innovation Council organised its first online Corporate Day on 12 May 2020 together with Enel, the global energy company. Originally planned as a physical event to be held in March, it was fully digitalised for the convenience of the SMEs and corporate representatives. 33 EIC-backed SMEs had the chance to pitch their innovations in the field of renewable energy, smart cities and grid solutions, among others. Over 40 Enel representatives were present to listen to the pitches and scout interesting projects.
Every month the European Innovation Council organise an ‘EIC ePitching with Investors’ around a dedicated topic. On 14 May 2020 the theme of the session was Mobility & Transport, which brought together seven high-class EIC-backed SMEs with six investors firms. Transmetrics AD, a Bulgarian start-up, took home the prize for ‘best pitch’.

The Italian start-up is providing insurance companies and digital communities with a platform that helps profiling and engage their customers. There are about 36 million people in the world who are blind, and a further 216 million who live with moderate to severe visual impairments. But fortunately, innovations are now playing an important role to deliver deep improvements to their quality of life. The app Be My Eyes, for example, is connecting customers who are blind or have low vision with over 850,000 volunteers for guidance and help with tasks like cooking, finding lost items, catching a bus, reviewing mail and more. The EIC-funded solution is a game-changer, proving how innovation is fostering inclusion.
Can a blockchain innovation build paperless offices across businesses and organisations? The British-Polish fintech Billon Group says yes. The company provides a Blockchain Platform powered by distributed ledger technology (DLT), based on a new type of architecture storing full documents entirely in the blockchain.

Venture capital investors poured €1.7 billion into European healthcare startups during the first quarter of 2020. According to PitchBook’s European Venture Report Q1 2020, the first three months of the year constituted the fourth-strongest quarter ever in terms of total deal value in Europe, with a special focus on Europe’s healthcare ecosystem. Several technology-integrated solutions in the health sector have closed venture capital funding rounds and attracted investment amid COVID-19 outbreak. Janny van den Eijnden-van Raaij, the managing director of hDMT (Institute for Human Organ and Disease Model Technologies) tells us more about how Organ-on-Chip technology can mimic human physiology and the project ORCHID (ORgan-on-Chip In Development)funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) program.
A total of 117 innovative solutions to tackle the coronavirus have been selected as winners of the European Innovation Council-led #EUvsVirus Hackathon. The event, which involved over 380 volunteers, 2,400 mentors and over 800 partners, brought together over 20,900 participants from 141 different nationalities, as well as different areas of expertise and backgrounds.
The European Innovation Council brought together over 50 public and private procurers, five European corporates and more than 20 EIC-backed SMEs during the first EIC ePitching with Procurers, a dedicated session on COVID19-solutions. The procurers, public as well as private-sector, and the SMEs had the opportunity to pitch their needs and respective solutions followed by a vote on who pitched the most innovative solutions. Eyecontrol and RESPINOR went home with the prize in their respective pitching-sessions.

When it comes to scaling up a business, in today’s challenging market it can be difficult to attract investors. There are a plethora of startups competing and trying to secure the exact same time with the same investors. To make it more difficult, many SMEs pitch to many investors without receiving any concrete feedback. So, in a sea of many, what should companies be doing to stand out in the crowd? 22 April 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual celebration of the environmental movement. According to the official Earth Day site, the theme for this year's Earth Day is climate action. On 15 April 2020 seven EIC-backed innovators had the chance to show their COVID-19 solutions during a dedicated EIC ePitching session with Investors. This session was hosted after the overwhelming attention and innovative solutions that were being proposed in the EIC Community.

The EIC is pleased to invite all eligible startups to participate in our monthly EIC ePitching with Investors. This edition will focus on mobility and transport-related innovations and will take place on 14 May 2020, 12 pm CET, mark your calendars! A limited number of EIC-backed up SMEs will have the chance to show their innovative solutions in all matters related to mobility and transport via an online tool to a jury of investors –consisting out of representatives from Earlybird, Munich Venture Partners, Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, Siemens Venture Capital, InMotion Ventures, Maniv Mobility and WBX Ventures.

The European Innovation Council is organising to a special ePitching session with Procurers on 30 April 2020. This session will be dedicated to connecting public and private procurers from the health sector with EIC-funded companies providing medical supply solutions and innovative biotechnologies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On 8 April 2020 EIC-backed SMEs had the chance to show their Agritech solutions during a dedicated EIC ePitching session with investors.
On 7 April, EIC beneficiaries were introduced to the full process of fundraising during the EIC’s first ever online Community Event. The event was focused on the best ways of finding potential investors, communicating and pitching, and understanding negotiation tactics and terms and conditions. The online training, led by EIC business coach Martin Theyer, combined the suitability of different types of funding to companies in different sectors, stages of growth and market readiness.
On 15 April 2020 12.00-2.00 pm (CET) seven EIC-funded SMEs will pitch their COVID-related innovations to investors from Capricorn Ventures, Clinical Research Ventures, Diffusion Capital Partners, the European Investment Bank, Idacapital, Illumina Ventures, Panakes Partners and Monte Carlo Capital.

The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is launching a fast-track call for proposals on the development of therapeutics and diagnostics to tackle current and future Coronavirus outbreaks. The call has a budget of EUR 45 million from the EU’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. The funding can support projects of organisations such as universities and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
