The EIC created a new Story 22 September 2020
On 14 September 2020 a dozen EIC-backed innovators were invited to an ‘EIC ePitching to Procurers’-session, together with bpost, Belgium’s national postal provider. The SMEs had the opportunity to pitch their innovative solutions on eMobility and charging infrastructure to bpost’s procurement division and engage in pre-arranged business meetings in the hopes of fostering new connections and partnerships.

After the success of the first EIC ePitching to Procurers on COVID-19, the European Innovation Council invites you to a second edition, taking place on 17 November 2020. This session will be dedicated to connecting public and private procurers, from Europe or anywhere in the world, from the health sector with EIC-funded companies providing medical supply solutions and innovative biotechnologies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

On 2 and 3 September 2020 the European Innovation Council and Evonik partnered up for a second time in little over two years, bringing another EIC Corporate Day to some of Europe’s most innovative start-ups and scale-ups. With the first edition, which took place in February 2019, focused on health and personal care, this Corporate Day was all about sustainability and circular economy.
The European start-up scene is teeming with life: many European cities are establishing themselves as some of the most vibrant start-up hubs the world has to offer. In autumn 2020, the EIC will organise three dedicated EIC virtual hub visits to Stockholm, Barcelona and Berlin, starting with the Swedish capital on 13-14 October. A great opportunity to get to know these hubs inside out, meet innovation players and submerge yourself in their business culture. All that from the comfort of your own digital workspace!

By turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities, Europe is striving to be the first climate-neutral continent by 2050. In this light, the European Innovation Council is giving all EIC beneficiaries the opportunity to participate in the very first European ‘Greenathon’: an ideation hackathon that will digitally connect innovators funded by the EIC. From 27 October to 30 October 2020, we will address pressing key sustainability challenges proposed by large European corporate players like HenkelX Ventures, Saint-Gobain, with many more on the way.
The PLATFORMA project will produce novel high-content phenotypic platforms for screening cosmetics, pollutants and new therapeutics. The project builds on the results of the Pathfinder (FET-Open) project, MESO-BRAIN, which developed functional 3D human-stem-cell-derived neural networks of defined and reproducible architecture, based on that of a brain cortical module that will display in vivo connectivity and activity.

From longer droughts to increased flooding and more robust crop diseases, climate change is creating new challenges for the European agriculture sector. With more accurate and reliable water data, crop yields on agricultural land can be improved and this information can help to fight the global food and water crisis. Through the support of the EIC-funded WATER4AGRI project, the Dutch company VanderSat developed a technology that can accurately measure the location and amount of water in the soil, anywhere in the world.
Nanomaterials and nanodevices constitute key technology improving e.g. precision medicine and therapeutic approaches. The BOW project will advance this field by camouflaging them with natural biomembranes from extracellular vesicles.

The European Innovation Council Business Acceleration Services invites EIC Pathfinder beneficiaries (FET-Open & FET-Proactive ) to participate in our second Innovation Training Workshop. You will get the opportunity to learn in depth about eventual/potential commercialisation of your projects outcomes and maximise your value proposition. The two-day workshop will be based on interactive sessions and will offer concrete business tools to you and your research project, which can be immediately implemented. 
The resolution of Virtual Reality devices on the market is just 1/100 of what the average human eye can see. This means that all visual details are lost due to heavy pixelization, which makes these products rather useless in professional applications. Varjo is the first and only company in the world to deliver human-eye resolution virtual and mixed reality devices, meeting the most demanding enterprise applications across training and simulation, design and engineering and research. With the latest funding round, the Finnish startup has raised $100 million in total.
In our daily routines, whether we send an email, we post something on Facebook, or we download an episode from a TV show, we generate data that is stored in different data centres. These data centres and cloud providers consume 6% of the global electricity and generate 4% of the global CO2 emissions, posing a serious threat to the environment. The digital industry is trying to minimise its impact on the environment with different attempts, and the Spanish startup Submer is doing its part. The EIC-funded project is changing data centres to make them as sustainable as possible.
The BrainCom project develops novel medical devices for restoration of speech and communication in aphasic patients suffering from upper spinal cord, brainstem or brain damage. At the same time the researchers also tackle the ethical aspects of the innovative technology.
Within the EIC Business Acceleration Services, the European Commission launched a new open call for tenders for the EIC GHG Programme. This call shall result in a service contract to support beneficiaries in creating and adapting products and services to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The European Innovation Council is pleased to invite all eligible startups to participate in our monthly EIC ePitching with Investors. This edition will focus on Fintech, Insurtech & Blockchain innovations and will take place on 15 October 2020, 1 PM CET. A limited number of EIC-backed SMEs will have the chance to present their innovative solutions via an online tool to a jury of investors – consisting of representatives from NFT Ventures, Anthemis, Downing Ventures, Finch Capital, Balderton Capital and Speedinvest.

During the past five weeks, the European Innovation Council offered an online EIC Summer School focusing on several challenges with dedicated training sessions. In partnership with The DO School, the EIC Community events provided tools and key lessons on leveraging capabilities, moving quickly, and maximising teams through crisis and change. The European Commission launched a new open call for tenders for the European Innovation Council - Overseas Trade Fairs 2.0 programme. This call shall result in a service contract to facilitate the access of EIC beneficiaries to key international trade fairs in geographical markets outside the European Union. In 2015, Cellink shook up the industry with its breakthrough universal bio ink, the very first on the market to be commercialised. The Gothenburg-based company offered a 3D printable bio ink, which is used to print organs and tissues. This allows medical tests to be carried out on human tissue instead of animals or humans. Here’s how it all started.

If you’re in need of some refreshment, you can find them in large coolers in gas stations, supermarkets and in other stores. The European Innovation Council is organising a second ePitching to Procurers-session on COVID-19 on 17 November 2020. The goal is to connect public and private procurers from the health sector with EIC-funded companies providing medical supply and innovative technologies (e.g. tele-medicine, remote solutions, artificial intelligence for data analysis and prediction, supply chain management, logistics) as a solution to the COVID-19 pandemic. This specific call is solely for public and private procurers interested in participating.
The newly signed Pathfinder project called BRAINIAQS promises huge breakthrough for biological imaging experiments. It will develop state-of-the-art technology using quantum sensing.
Let us present you another new EIC Pathfinder project: IM-TWIN. The project wants to develop an innovative, modular, technological system, called IM-TWIN, for the monitoring and treatment of cognitive and emotional skills of typical developed children and children with autism spectrum disorders.
On 2-3 September 2020 procurement experts, suppliers, researchers and key opinion leaders from all over Europe will meet online to share their experiences and best practices of using procurement as an effective tool for transition towards the circular economy. The purpose of the Baltic Circular Procurement Congress is to raise awareness of circular concepts, procurement in particular, highlight good practices, share experiences and pave the road ahead for circular procurement to enter the mainstream.

On 3 and 4 June 2020 the European Innovation Council celebrated the launched of a brand-new initiative, specifically focused on the EU Green Deal. The EIC Planet.tech brings together EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates, namely AB inBev, DEME, Nestle and P&G, with the objective to develop a number of impactful and sustainable Proof of Concepts (PoC).
EIC-beneficiaries are invited to applied to apply to the International Space Pitch Day, organised and financed by the US Department of Defence and the UK Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization NATO. On 17 November, selected start-up tech companies and inventors will get the chance to pitch directly to UK and US military leaders for a $1-million investment to fast-track their ideas for cutting-edge Space innovations.

Thales, a leading global service provider to the aerospace, defence, transportation and security sectors and Thales Alenia Space, its space joint venture with Leonardo, are looking for innovative startups and SMEs in their sectors, especially focusing on space.
Phase shifters change the transmission phase angle of an input signal. They provides a phase shift to the signal by adding propagation delay and are the main building blocks of any beam steering capable system. Phase shifters are used e.g. in satellite communications, beamforming modules, phase cancellation, or communications antennas. SMARTWAVE project wants to take advantage of the re-configurability potential of high-frequency phase shifters and innovate them by proposing new technological approach, which meets the requirements of frequency scalability, increased power efficiency, reduced size and re-configurability.

In today's episode, we get together with Francisco Guillén, co-founder and CEO of BlockTac, a Barcelona-based start-up. BlockTac relies on blockchain technology to provide authenticity and open verification for all digital certificates and seals used by, for example, universities, professional associations, and food and consumer products.
The European Commission in collaboration with FETFX organises the second annual Future Tech Week, which will take place entirely online, from 21 to 25 September 2020. The event provides EIC Pathfinder FET projects with a unique opportunity and broad platform upon which to showcase their achievements in fields aligning with the European Commission’s priorities, including Artificial Intelligence and information technology, health and biotech, culture and society, energy and environment, and nanotech and materials. At LG Sonic, they reduce chemical cost by controlling algae and biofilm in different applications like surface water, industrial water, and maritime.
During the past months, organisations had to adapt to the new reality imposed by the COVID-19 outbreak. Small and Medium Enterprises are also facing a learning curve, constantly adapting their businesses to the post-pandemic ways of working. The European Innovation Council is aware of the hurdles the EIC-entrepreneurs are facing and created a crisis coaching team to help beneficiaries to adjust their projects and strengthen their companies in future disruptions.
The European Innovation Council is organising an ePitching with Procurers-session together with bpost, Belgium’s national post-provider. This session, taking place on 14 September 2020 at 1 pm CET, will be dedicated to matching EIC-beneficiaries with bpost’s procurement needs in the fields of eMobility and charging infrastructure.
Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up on our streets, in our rivers and covering our forests. A large part of this waste comes from packaging. The plastic bags we use, for only a few minutes, can last as long as 15 to 1,000 years in the environment and, according to a recent study, people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. The Finnish start-up Paptic Ltd, founded in 2015, addresses this environmental challenge with a sustainable alternative to plastic films. Paptic material has all the advantages of plastic - it's versatile, reusable, light-weight, soft, but it's made of renewable raw materials and it’s recyclable.

On 3 and 4 June 2020 the European Innovation Council celebrated the launched of a brand-new initiative specifically focused on the EU Green Deal. The EIC Planet.tech brings together EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates, namely AB inBev, DEME, Nestle and P&G, with the objective to develop a number of impactful Proof of Concepts (PoC). Nicolas Verschelden, Head of Digital Innovation ABI Europe and Managing Partner Dream Tech alliance, a joint consortium of different tech-partners that co-innovate and co-invest together, goes deeper into AB InBev’s motivations for joining Planet.tech and what they are hoping to get out of it.

On 29 and 30 June 33 EIC-beneficiaries went on a digital tour of the Netherlands during the EIC Corporate Day with Dutch giants. During the event, the SMEs matched up and explored business opportunities and collaborations with four of the Netherlands’ largest corporates: Eneco, KPN, Rabobank and Unilever.
The last few months have rapidly increased the digitalization of the economy. The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the sectors directly affected by the recent developments. There is a clear case for investment in deep-tech start-ups involved in IoT and July’s EIC ePitching with Investors subsequently delivered a session on IoT and Smart Cities. Bringing together seven highly innovative EIC-backed SMEs with seven investor firms, Crypto Quantique, a British deep-tech company working on innovative cybersecurity solutions, was this month’s EIC ePitching with Investors session.
A crisis often comes unexpected! During the past months, every business had to adapt to the new reality imposed by the COVID-19 outbreak. The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with F. Hoffmann-La Roche, organised a four-day long EIC Corporate Day, as part of a virtual Roche Innovation Summit, from 22 to 25 June 2020. The EIC Corporate Day, one of the flag-ship Business Acceleration Services provided by the EIC, gives the EIC-backed startups the opportunity to opportunity to bridge the gap with corporate representatives and explore new synergies, business opportunities and further collaborations with them.

Raising capital and attracting investors are some of the key concerns of many of our EIC beneficiaries. On one side, they must consider how to approach investors, and on the other how to be best prepared to meet them. With the EIC Community Talk: Ask me anything about Investors on 26 June 2020, 30 EIC-beneficiaries had the chance to receive insights from peers and have an in-depth discussion regarding investment rounds.
The idea behind the SMILE project follows the outcomes of an ongoing FET-Open (EIC Pathfinder) project called ChipScope, which focuses on developing the first chip-sized optical microscope with super-resolution capabilities, and semiconductor nanoLED arrays with individual pixel operation. Such highly integrated nanoLED arrays from ChipScope will lead to extreme miniaturization and simplicity for super-resolution microscopy.
In addition to facilitating Series A funding for selected companies through accelerator events, InvestHorizon offers an individual programme customised to the investment-readiness needs and challenges of each company. The programme aims to support 500 European Deeptech entrepreneurs in raising EUR 500 million over two and a half years. On 2 July 2020 1.00-3.30 pm (CET) the European Innovation Council (EIC) will host the last ePitching with Investors before the summer. This month’s session will revolve around IoT and Smart Cities, with seven EIC-funded SMEs going head-to-head. Investors from Breega Capital, Indico Capital Partners, SAP, United Ventures, SET Ventures, Tengelmann Ventures, Primoglio SGR will attend the session, rate the pitches and engage in one-to-one’s, a newly added feature to the ePitching with Investors. The EIC Community Training of June focused on this challenge and provided key recruitment tips, ranging from leadership strategies to the best ways for retaining top employees.
The EIC Fund, which will provide equity from €0.5m to €15m to breakthrough innovation companies selected for EIC Accelerator blended finance support (grant and equity), has become an official entity. This is the first time the European Commission will make such direct equity investments in companies, with ownership stakes expected to be in general from 10% to 25% in start-up companies. The European Investment Bank, as advisors of the EIC Fund on behalf of the European Commission, will manage the ownership stakes of the European Commission.
On 16 June 2020, the European Innovation Council organised an ePitching session with Investors on SaaS and ICT. After the event, Kinga Stanislawska, member of the EIC Advisory Board and herself a venture capital investor, talked more about the future of SaaS and ICT sector, commented the novelties introduced in the EIC programme and shared her views on the existing gender investment gap in Europe. Kinga is active in supporting women-led companies. The VC investor is a mentor in Vital Voices and Foundation for Women Entrepreneurship and also co-founded the ‘European Women in VC’ community of over 400 women in the European and Israeli VC space.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often praised for its ability to make objective and rational decisions, unlike humans, who deal with reality in a subjective manner. The researchers from the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project TIMESTORM trained robots to learn some of these subjective abilities of humans, focusing on time-perception.

The EIC started this summer by diving into the hot Software-as-a-Service topic. The ePitching on SaaS and ICT began with the speech of Kinga Stanislawska, member of the EIC advisory board, who mentioned the importance of this sector to the growth of Europe and finished with DeepCode winning the best pitch award. The online event brought together six high-class EIC-backed SMEs with nine investors firms.

In this online event, Roche will continue the conversation around transforming healthcare and take a different angle to focus on “how to build a sustainable ecosystem to drive innovation”.
The Irish company, developing cutting-edge technology to help cure cancers, has secured a significant new Series C round of approximately €18 million, bringing the total equity funding to around €37 million. The capital was led by existing shareholders, including Seamus Mulligan, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive.
Imagine travelling from Paris to Berlin (878km) in less than an hour. Cheaper, faster and greener travel, this is what Spanish start-up Zeleros is offering with their hyperloop. This new form of ground transport promises speeding up to 1,000km/h through a network of low-pressure tubes. It can make hundred-mile journeys more sustainable with 0 direct emissions, thanks to its fully electric powertrain. This month, the startup received €7m in funding to lead the development of its unique version of the “fifth mode of transport”.
On 9 June 2020 the European Innovation Council hosted an EIC Community Training on HR for start-ups in the process of scaling. In this session 21 EIC-funded SMEs had to chance to learn and interact with Jose Martinez, EIC business coach specialised in leadership and HR, and EIC community member Diana Špakauskaitė, HR-manager at Ruptela.
Last week, 3 and 4 June, saw the kick-off of yet another new EIC-initiative, Planet.tech, an event focused on EU Green Deal-challenges. The online session brought together 28 EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates, namely AB InBEV, Deme, Nestle and P&G, with the objective to develop a number of Proof of Concepts (PoC) and enhance the cooperation between start-ups/scale-ups and large corporates.

Since 4 June 2020, the Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is traded on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with BBVA and Ferrovial, organised an online Corporate Day on 26 and 27 May 2020, bringing together 19 EIC-backed SMEs with over 50 corporates representatives. The online Corporate Day was the second event of its kind to be organised this month and gave SMEs and corporate representatives the opportunity to find synergies and explore business opportunities and further collaborations.
In 2018, thanks to EnduroSat, the Bulgarian Space Industry celebrated a historical moment: the first country’s CubeSat was activated in space and connected to two ground stations. This was the first space mission for EnduroSat, involving schools and universities to ensure a long-lasting educational outreach program in addition to the technical verification of all the components. This year, a new satellite from EnduroSat will lift off, and the Bulgarian startup will make history again.

Time is an illusion, breakfast time doubly so. In future, human workers might not be alone in experiencing frenetic mornings thanks to EU-funded researchers who have equipped robots with human-like time perception capabilities – and tested them in the kitchen.
Greening agriculture is one of the main challenges in the fight against climate change. In line with the European Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Farm to Fork Strategy for a healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Many pesticides and antibiotics are being banned to ensure healthier food, boost organic farming and privilege the use of eco-friendly solutions. Founded in 2018, the EIC-funded innovation developed by Agrosustain is a good example working on this domain. The Swiss start-up is trying to reduce food waste and promote sustainable agriculture with natural solutions for pest management.
On 13 and 14 May the European Innovation Council hosted an Innovation Training Workshop for projects from the EIC Pathfinder programme, previously known as Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) programme. The European Innovation Council organised its first online Corporate Day on 12 May 2020 together with Enel, the global energy company. Originally planned as a physical event to be held in March, it was fully digitalised for the convenience of the SMEs and corporate representatives. 33 EIC-backed SMEs had the chance to pitch their innovations in the field of renewable energy, smart cities and grid solutions, among others. Over 40 Enel representatives were present to listen to the pitches and scout interesting projects.
Every month the European Innovation Council organise an ‘EIC ePitching with Investors’ around a dedicated topic. On 14 May 2020 the theme of the session was Mobility & Transport, which brought together seven high-class EIC-backed SMEs with six investors firms. Transmetrics AD, a Bulgarian start-up, took home the prize for ‘best pitch’.
