Maurizio Aiello is an innovator, the CEO of the biotechnology company, React4life that helps scientists in the field of cancer research. The Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is launching a fast-track call for proposals on the development of therapeutics and diagnostics to tackle current and future Coronavirus outbreaks. In March 2017, three new entrepreneurs with a great background in the world of engineering and energy launched Rated Power, a start-up that wants to make solar energy the first world source thanks to its solution pvDesign. The leader of this initiative is Andrea Barber, the winner of EDP Open Innovation and participant in the 2017 edition of the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. The Spanish CEO of Rated Power is playing an important role in a technical sector, historically covered by men.
For the first time the European Innovation Council organised an Innovation Procurers Day, together with the German Association for Supply Chain Management, Procurement and Logistics (BME) and its members. During this day 9 EIC-backed innovators had the exclusive chance to pitch to innovative procurers from the Pharma industry. The EIC-funded company BotsAndUs announced a partnership with British Airways to provide a solution that will reduce travel stress by assisting all passengers with relevant information to their journey and airport stay. The robot Bill will interact with customers in multiple languages and escort them to locations such as cafes, toilets, meeting rooms and family check-in zones.
ChangeNow is organising “the largest positive impact gathering in the world”. 92 companies funded by the SME Instrument under Phase 2 met on 15/16 October, in Brussels, for the Welcome Days. The purpose was to bring the SMEs selected for funding together, in order to network and share experiences. From sessions focused on how to sell to public buyers, to training workshops related to large corporates, the event has tried to address the core challenges SMEs face in a cohesive way.

108 innovative projects will get support from the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot to bring their innovations faster onto the market. The total amount to be distributed to the projects under the EIC Accelerator and the Fast Track to Innovation strands of the EIC pilot is €210.216 million. European Innovation Council pilot's funded Finnish company ICEYE has been featured in BBC for an impressive demonstration of its novel technology's capabilities. The company is the first in the world to achieve better than 1 meter resolution imagery from under-100kg (220 pounds) SAR satellites. This level of performance is expected from traditional spacecraft that weigh a tonne or more and cost in excess of one hundred million euros, but Iceye's breakthrough satellites are the size of a suitcase and cost only a couple of million to build.

With oceans becoming clogged by plastics, companies are introducing eco-friendly consumer products to take advantage of the public growing concerns over plastic waste. Most of the plastics are actually packaging. This problem has been addressed by some biodegradable solutions such as bioplastic, paper or even bamboo containers. However, they still need at least half a year to degrade. Warsaw-based manufacturer Biotrem is making more than 10 million pieces of biodegradable disposable (single-use) tableware and cutlery that compost — without need for industrial composting facilities — within 30 days.

On 4 April, 33 innovative companies led by women and funded by the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot met for an EIC Investor Day in Brussels to promote the access of women entrepreneurs to finance.
