The EIC Accelerator is supporting the EU Green Deal via a dedicated funding call and the consequent selection of 64 Green SMEs. In addition to the funding, the EIC supports this ambitious agenda through a series of events like the EIC Greenathon and EIC Investors Day on the EU Green Deal.

On 14 September 2020 a dozen EIC-backed innovators were invited to an ‘EIC ePitching to Procurers’-session, together with bpost, Belgium’s national postal provider. From longer droughts to increased flooding and more robust crop diseases, climate change is creating new challenges for the European agriculture sector. With more accurate and reliable water data, crop yields on agricultural land can be improved and this information can help to fight the global food and water crisis. Through the support of the EIC-funded WATER4AGRI project, the Dutch company VanderSat developed a technology that can accurately measure the location and amount of water in the soil, anywhere in the world.

Coming back from a busy day at work, for a long trip by car, we all choose take-away beverages. If you’re in need of some refreshment, you can find them in large coolers in gas stations, supermarkets and in other stores. Most of these coolers consume high amounts of energy, take up a lot of space and are, often, very basic in their design. Nordic 24/7 comes with a solution. With their space cooler ‘Home of Cool’, they are bringing a sleeker, smarter and more eco-friendly cooler to stores and restaurants near you.
On 2-3 September 2020 procurement experts, suppliers, researchers and key opinion leaders from all over Europe will meet online to share their experiences and best practices of using procurement as an effective tool for transition towards the circular economy. The purpose of the Baltic Circular Procurement Congress is to raise awareness of circular concepts, procurement in particular, highlight good practices, share experiences and pave the road ahead for circular procurement to enter the mainstream.

The European Commission in collaboration with FETFX organises the second annual Future Tech Week, which will take place entirely online, from 21 to 25 September 2020. The event provides EIC Pathfinder FET projects with a unique opportunity and broad platform upon which to showcase their achievements in fields aligning with the European Commission’s priorities, including Artificial Intelligence and information technology, health and biotech, culture and society, energy and environment, and nanotech and materials. His passion lies with green scale-ups. He is the proud CEO of LG Sonic, a leading example of what a green innovative SME can achieve. At LG Sonic, they reduce chemical cost by controlling algae and biofilm in different applications like surface water, industrial water, and maritime.
Every year millions of tons of plastic waste end up on our streets, in our rivers and covering our forests. A large part of this waste comes from packaging. The plastic bags we use, for only a few minutes, can last as long as 15 to 1,000 years in the environment and, according to a recent study, people could be ingesting or inhaling approximately 5 grams of plastic every week. The Finnish start-up Paptic Ltd, founded in 2015, addresses this environmental challenge with a sustainable alternative to plastic films. Paptic material has all the advantages of plastic - it's versatile, reusable, light-weight, soft, but it's made of renewable raw materials and it’s recyclable.

On 29 and 30 June 33 EIC-beneficiaries went on a digital tour of the Netherlands during the EIC Corporate Day with Dutch giants. During the event, the SMEs matched up and explored business opportunities and collaborations with four of the Netherlands’ largest corporates: Eneco, KPN, Rabobank and Unilever.

Imagine travelling from Paris to Berlin (878km) in less than an hour. Cheaper, faster and greener travel, this is what Spanish start-up Zeleros is offering with their hyperloop. This new form of ground transport promises speeding up to 1,000km/h through a network of low-pressure tubes. It can make hundred-mile journeys more sustainable with 0 direct emissions, thanks to its fully electric powertrain. This month, the startup received €7m in funding to lead the development of its unique version of the “fifth mode of transport”.
Last week, 3 and 4 June, saw the kick-off of yet another new EIC-initiative, Planet.tech, an event focused on EU Green Deal-challenges. The online session brought together 28 EIC-backed start-ups/scale-ups with four large corporates, namely AB InBEV, Deme, Nestle and P&G, with the objective to develop a number of Proof of Concepts (PoC) and enhance the cooperation between start-ups/scale-ups and large corporates.
Since 2018, 3 June is known as the first official ‘World Bicycle Day’ to encourage the multiple environmental benefits of using bicycles for transport and leisure. Two days later, on 5 June, the World Environment Day takes place. The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with BBVA and Ferrovial, organised an online Corporate Day on 26 and 27 May 2020, bringing together 19 EIC-backed SMEs with over 50 corporates representatives. The online Corporate Day was the second event of its kind to be organised this month and gave SMEs and corporate representatives the opportunity to find synergies and explore business opportunities and further collaborations.
Greening agriculture is one of the main challenges in the fight against climate change. In line with the European Green Deal, the European Commission adopted a comprehensive new Biodiversity Strategy to bring nature back into our lives and a Farm to Fork Strategy for a healthy and environmentally friendly food system. Many pesticides and antibiotics are being banned to ensure healthier food, boost organic farming and privilege the use of eco-friendly solutions. Founded in 2018, the EIC-funded innovation developed by Agrosustain is a good example working on this domain. The Swiss start-up is trying to reduce food waste and promote sustainable agriculture with natural solutions for pest management.
The EIC created a new Story 18 May 2020
The European Innovation Council organised its first online Corporate Day on 12 May 2020 together with Enel, the global energy company. Originally planned as a physical event to be held in March, it was fully digitalised for the convenience of the SMEs and corporate representatives. 33 EIC-backed SMEs had the chance to pitch their innovations in the field of renewable energy, smart cities and grid solutions, among others. Over 40 Enel representatives were present to listen to the pitches and scout interesting projects.
Every month the European Innovation Council organise an ‘EIC ePitching with Investors’ around a dedicated topic. On 14 May 2020 the theme of the session was Mobility & Transport, which brought together seven high-class EIC-backed SMEs with six investors firms. Transmetrics AD, a Bulgarian start-up, took home the prize for ‘best pitch’.
On 14 May 2020 12.00-1.30 pm (CET) the European Innovation Council (EIC) will host their 7th ‘ePitching with Investors’ of the year. This month’s session will revolve around Mobility & Transport, with seven EIC-funded SMEs gearing up to pitch their innovations. Investors from Earlybird, Munich Venture Partners, Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, Siemens Venture Capital, InMotion Ventures, Maniv Mobility and WBX Ventures will attend the session and pick their favourite.

22 April 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual celebration of the environmental movement. According to the official Earth Day site, the theme for this year's Earth Day is climate action. The mission is to encourage individuals and organisations around the world to continue moving towards innovation to face the climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future. But while this day is a 24-h celebration, many start-ups spend the entire year going green, with innovating projects to accomplish this goal. The EIC is pleased to invite all eligible startups to participate in our monthly EIC ePitching with Investors. This edition will focus on mobility and transport-related innovations and will take place on 14 May 2020, 12 pm CET, mark your calendars! A limited number of EIC-backed up SMEs will have the chance to show their innovative solutions in all matters related to mobility and transport via an online tool to a jury of investors –consisting out of representatives from Earlybird, Munich Venture Partners, Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, Siemens Venture Capital, InMotion Ventures, Maniv Mobility and WBX Ventures.
