The EIC is pleased to invite all eligible startups to participate in our monthly EIC ePitching with Investors. This edition will focus on mobility and transport-related innovations and will take place on 14 May 2020, 12 pm CET, mark your calendars! A limited number of EIC-backed up SMEs will have the chance to show their innovative solutions in all matters related to mobility and transport via an online tool to a jury of investors –consisting out of representatives from Earlybird, Munich Venture Partners, Robert Bosch Venture Capital GmbH, Siemens Venture Capital, InMotion Ventures, Maniv Mobility and WBX Ventures.

22 April 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, the annual celebration of the environmental movement. According to the official Earth Day site, the theme for this year's Earth Day is climate action. The mission is to encourage individuals and organisations around the world to continue moving towards innovation to face the climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future. But while this day is a 24-h celebration, many start-ups spend the entire year going green, with innovating projects to accomplish this goal. On 29 April 2020 1.00-2.30 pm (CET) the European Innovation Council (EIC) and the European Business Angel Network (EBAN) will jointly host an ePitching session with Investors on eHealth. Five EIC-funded SMEs will pitch their innovations to representatives from Business Region Göteborg, Lincs, Peppermint Ventures, Rockies Impact Fund Sciety, Entrepreneurship Advisor Maria Hala and Seed Investor Stephan Roecker.
To complement hackathons taking place at global and member state level, the European Commission - in close collaboration with EU member states – will host a pan-European hackathon to connect civil society, innovators, partners and buyers across Europe to develop innovative solutions to coronavirus. There are a plethora of startups competing and trying to secure the exact same time with the same investors. To make it more difficult, many SMEs pitch to many investors without receiving any concrete feedback. So, in a sea of many, what should companies be doing to stand out in the crowd? The European Innovation Council Business Acceleration Services and Roche invite you to apply for our joint EIC Corporate Day Online, a specially designed service to increase and accelerate your business collaborations with Roche, the pharmaceutical giant.
SYNCH, an ongoing EU-funded project, is creating a hybrid system where a neural network in the brain of a living animal and a silicon neural network of spiking neurons on a chip are interconnected by neuromorphic synapses.
For the past couple of years the EIC and EBAN are working together on numerous occasions to bring you the EIC/EBAN ePitching with Investors. On 29 April 2020 the 5th edition was held, this time around the topic of eHealth.
The European Innovation Council brought together over 50 public and private procurers, five European corporates and more than 20 EIC-backed SMEs during the first EIC ePitching with Procurers, a dedicated session on COVID19-solutions. The procurers, public as well as private-sector, and the SMEs had the opportunity to pitch their needs and respective solutions followed by a vote on who pitched the most innovative solutions. Eyecontrol and RESPINOR went home with the prize in their respective pitching-sessions.
A total of 117 innovative solutions to tackle the coronavirus have been selected as winners of the European Innovation Council-led #EUvsVirus Hackathon. The event, which involved over 380 volunteers, 2,400 mentors and over 800 partners, brought together over 20,900 participants from 141 different nationalities, as well as different areas of expertise and backgrounds.

Can a blockchain innovation build paperless offices across businesses and organisations? The British-Polish fintech Billon Group says yes. The company provides a Blockchain Platform powered by distributed ledger technology (DLT), based on a new type of architecture storing full documents entirely in the blockchain.
There are about 36 million people in the world who are blind, and a further 216 million who live with moderate to severe visual impairments. But fortunately, innovations are now playing an important role to deliver deep improvements to their quality of life. The app Be My Eyes, for example, is connecting customers who are blind or have low vision with over 850,000 volunteers for guidance and help with tasks like cooking, finding lost items, catching a bus, reviewing mail and more. The EIC-funded solution is a game-changer, proving how innovation is fostering inclusion.

The Italian start-up is providing insurance companies and digital communities with a platform that helps profiling and engage their customers. The EIC solution offers relevant insurance through push notifications, delivering an ‘instant’ 7-second insurance policy sign-up. In this platform, zero paperwork is required to ensure a better experience for users. This year Neosurance closed a €1.1 million funding round, backed by Net Insurance, Luiss Alumni 4 Growth and a group of investors led by Mezzetti Advisory Group.

Every month the European Innovation Council organise an ‘EIC ePitching with Investors’ around a dedicated topic. On 14 May 2020 the theme of the session was Mobility & Transport, which brought together seven high-class EIC-backed SMEs with six investors firms. Transmetrics AD, a Bulgarian start-up, took home the prize for ‘best pitch’.

The European Innovation Council organised its first online Corporate Day on 12 May 2020 together with Enel, the global energy company. Originally planned as a physical event to be held in March, it was fully digitalised for the convenience of the SMEs and corporate representatives. 33 EIC-backed SMEs had the chance to pitch their innovations in the field of renewable energy, smart cities and grid solutions, among others. Over 40 Enel representatives were present to listen to the pitches and scout interesting projects.
The Future and Emerging Technologies programme (FET) allows also young researchers and ambitious students to contribute to some of the most exciting research adventures. In a win-win situation, the fresh knowledge of junior researchers can become an asset for the progress of complex scientific challenges, while the students can experience a multidisciplinary approach to research.

Time is an illusion, breakfast time doubly so. In future, human workers might not be alone in experiencing frenetic mornings thanks to EU-funded researchers who have equipped robots with human-like time perception capabilities – and tested them in the kitchen.
In 2018, thanks to EnduroSat, the Bulgarian Space Industry celebrated a historical moment: the first country’s CubeSat was activated in space and connected to two ground stations. This was the first space mission for EnduroSat, involving schools and universities to ensure a long-lasting educational outreach program in addition to the technical verification of all the components. This year, a new satellite from EnduroSat will lift off, and the Bulgarian startup will make history again.
The European Innovation Council (EIC), in collaboration with BBVA and Ferrovial, organised an online Corporate Day on 26 and 27 May 2020, bringing together 19 EIC-backed SMEs with over 50 corporates representatives. The insurance-focused artificial intelligence (AI) solution has announced a partnership with Rokk3r, a global innovation technology and consulting company, to enable the company to enter the Latin American insurance market and roll out its AI-driven services to insurance companies based in the region.
NOVIRUSES2BRAIN is an ongoing research project, funded by the Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) program. Its ambition is to develop a unique drug able to eradicate multiple viral species simultaneously.

Dr. Regina Luttge is an expert in medical and biological microsystems having bio-inspired functionalities. She coordinates CONNECT, a Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) project, which aims at providing better treatment for neurodegenerative disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
Since 4 June 2020, the Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is traded on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. Idogen AB develops tolerogenic cell therapies to prevent the patient’s immune system from attacking biological agents, transplanted organs or the body’s own cells or tissues.
