On July 3rd, Ada Health, one of the EIC beneficiaries, has been distinguished in the "Hottest Health" section, on the Europas - the European Tech Startup Awards and Unconference held in London.
A total of 65 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) form 16 countries have been selected for funding under the latest round of the SME Instrument. The companies will receive a total amount of €113 million to share between their projects to get their innovations faster on the market.

Since 4 June 2020, the Swedish biotech company Idogen AB is traded on Nasdaq First North Growth Market. The traditional bell ringing was skipped due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the event was featured on the Nasdaq trading floor at Times Square in New York. Idogen AB develops tolerogenic cell therapies to prevent the patient’s immune system from attacking biological agents, transplanted organs or the body’s own cells or tissues.
The Irish company, developing cutting-edge technology to help cure cancers, has secured a significant new Series C round of approximately €18 million, bringing the total equity funding to around €37 million. The capital was led by existing shareholders, including Seamus Mulligan, an experienced biopharmaceutical executive.
The idea behind the SMILE project follows the outcomes of an ongoing FET-Open (EIC Pathfinder) project called ChipScope, which focuses on developing the first chip-sized optical microscope with super-resolution capabilities, and semiconductor nanoLED arrays with individual pixel operation. Such highly integrated nanoLED arrays from ChipScope will lead to extreme miniaturization and simplicity for super-resolution microscopy.

Medical technology company EBAMed announced the successful completion of a CHF 1.2 million seed financing round. EBAMed develops medical devices to enhance protontherapy, a precise non-invasive treatment option for heart arrhythmia patients. The seed financing will be used to test EBAMed‘s first integrated ultrasound-based device to monitor heart motion and command the therapy machine. These pre-clinical tests are planned for 2020 in at least one protontherapy center in Europe or the United States.

SYNCH, an ongoing EU-funded project, is creating a hybrid system where a neural network in the brain of a living animal and a silicon neural network of spiking neurons on a chip are interconnected by neuromorphic synapses.
A total of 117 innovative solutions to tackle the coronavirus have been selected as winners of the European Innovation Council-led #EUvsVirus Hackathon. The event, which involved over 380 volunteers, 2,400 mentors and over 800 partners, brought together over 20,900 participants from 141 different nationalities, as well as different areas of expertise and backgrounds.
There are about 36 million people in the world who are blind, and a further 216 million who live with moderate to severe visual impairments. But fortunately, innovations are now playing an important role to deliver deep improvements to their quality of life. The app Be My Eyes, for example, is connecting customers who are blind or have low vision with over 850,000 volunteers for guidance and help with tasks like cooking, finding lost items, catching a bus, reviewing mail and more. The EIC-funded solution is a game-changer, proving how innovation is fostering inclusion.
The Future and Emerging Technologies programme (FET) allows also young researchers and ambitious students to contribute to some of the most exciting research adventures. In a win-win situation, the fresh knowledge of junior researchers can become an asset for the progress of complex scientific challenges, while the students can experience a multidisciplinary approach to research.

On 15 April 2020 12.00-2.00 pm (CET) seven EIC-funded SMEs will pitch their COVID-related innovations to investors from Capricorn Ventures, Clinical Research Ventures, Diffusion Capital Partners, the European Investment Bank, Idacapital, Illumina Ventures, Panakes Partners and Monte Carlo Capital.
On 29 April 2020 1.00-2.30 pm (CET) the European Innovation Council (EIC) and the European Business Angel Network (EBAN) will jointly host an ePitching session with Investors on eHealth. Five EIC-funded SMEs will pitch their innovations to representatives from Business Region Göteborg, Lincs, Peppermint Ventures, Rockies Impact Fund Sciety, Entrepreneurship Advisor Maria Hala and Seed Investor Stephan Roecker.

The event provides EIC Pathfinder FET projects with a unique opportunity and broad platform upon which to showcase their achievements in fields aligning with the European Commission’s priorities, including Artificial Intelligence and information technology, health and biotech, culture and society, energy and environment, and nanotech and materials. Nanomaterials and nanodevices constitute key technology improving e.g. precision medicine and therapeutic approaches. The BOW project will advance this field by camouflaging them with natural biomembranes from extracellular vesicles.
The PLATFORMA project will produce novel high-content phenotypic platforms for screening cosmetics, pollutants and new therapeutics. The project builds on the results of the Pathfinder (FET-Open) project, MESO-BRAIN, which developed functional 3D human-stem-cell-derived neural networks of defined and reproducible architecture, based on that of a brain cortical module that will display in vivo connectivity and activity.

On 2 and 3 September 2020 the European Innovation Council and Evonik partnered up for a second time in little over two years, bringing another EIC Corporate Day to some of Europe’s most innovative start-ups and scale-ups. With the first edition, which took place in February 2019, focused on health and personal care, this Corporate Day was all about sustainability and circular economy.

NANO-EH, a new EIC Pathfinder project, will enhance emerging classes of energy harvesting nanomaterials, while surpassing the current paradigm by developing non-toxic and rare earth/lead-free materials exhibiting CMOS-compatibility and scalability for low cost and large-scale manufacturing.

The session was a follow-up of the first EIC ePitching with Investors on COVID-19, which took place in April this year.

The European Innovation Council brought together over 50 public and private procurers, five European corporates and more than 20 EIC-backed SMEs during the first EIC ePitching with Procurers, a dedicated session on COVID19-solutions. The procurers, public as well as private-sector, and the SMEs had the opportunity to pitch their needs and respective solutions followed by a vote on who pitched the most innovative solutions. Eyecontrol and RESPINOR went home with the prize in their respective pitching-sessions.
